ETIOPIA: AVVIATO IL TRASFERIMENTO UNHCR DI 7MILA RIFUGIATI ERITREI NEL NUOVO CAMPO DI SHIMELBAL'Alto Commissariato delle Nazioni Unite per i Rifugiati (UNHCR) avviato le operazioni di trasferimento di rifugiati eritrei che si trovano in un accampamento di fortuna in Etiopia * nel quale hanno vissuto per 4 anni - in un campo situato in una zona più sicura nell'entroterra, dove potranno ricevere maggiore assistenza. Questa settimana sono stati trasferiti i primi 2.400 rifugiati dall'accampamento di Wa'la Nhibi al nuovo campo di Shimelba. L'UNHCR ha in programma di trasferire tutti i 7.466 rifugiati eritrei che si trovano nel sito. Il costo di questa operazione di trasferimento e dell'allestimento del nuovo campo nel quale si stanno sviluppando sistemi per la fornitura d'acqua, preparando alloggi, ambulatori e scuole è di 800mila dollari. Circa 250 richiedenti asilo eritrei continuano ad arrivare ogni mese in Etiopia e si prevede che la popolazione di Shimelba raggiungerà le 9mila unità. Gli eritrei erano fuggiti nel nord dell'Etiopia a seguito della guerra di confine scoppiata nel maggio 2000 fra Eritrea ed Etiopia. Il sito nel quale gli eritrei hanno scelto di insediarsi - Wa'la Nhibi nella regione del Tigray - non è distante da Badme, località al centro degli scontri fra i due paesi. Il nuovo campo è più sicuro, trovandosi a 50 chilometri dal confine, come richiesto dalle regole dell'UNHCR e dagli accordi internazionali. Nel frattempo, l'UNHCR ha anche avviato le operazioni di registrazione dei rifugiati sudanesi che si trovano nel campo di Bamboudie in Etiopia, come primo passo verso il loro possibile rimpatrio, se verrà siglato un accordo di pace generale definitivo che porrà fine all'ultraventennale guerra civile nel Sudan meridionale.
